Specification Overview

ASTM A564 is an ASTM International specification covering bars and shapes of age-hardening stainless steels, including the widely used 17-4PH alloy (Type 630, UNS S17400). The specification encompasses hot-finished or cold-finished rounds, squares, hexagons, bar shapes, angles, tees, and channels. These shapes may be produced by hot rolling, extruding, or forging. The nominal composition of 17-4PH — 16% Chromium, 4.0% Nickel, 0.30% Columbium + Tantalum (Cb+Ta), and 4.0% Copper — delivers an exceptional combination of high strength, good corrosion resistance, and excellent mechanical properties that can be further enhanced through precipitation hardening heat treatment.

Per the specification description: "This specification covers bars and shapes of age-hardening stainless steels. Hot-finished or cold-finished rounds, squares, hexagons, bar shapes, angles, tees, and channels are included. These shapes may be produced by hot rolling, extruding, or forging. Type 631 and 632 stainless steels contain a large amount of ferrite in the microstructure and can have low ductility in forgings and large diameter bars. Material of types other than XM-16, XM-25, and Type 630 shall be furnished in the solution-annealed condition, or in the equalized and oven-tempered condition. Types 630, XM-16, and XM-25 may be furnished in the solution-annealed or age-hardened condition. Type UNS S46910 shall be furnished in solution annealed, cold-worked or aged-hardened condition. Shapes may be subjected to either Class A or Class C preparation for removal of visible surface imperfections. The material shall be subjected to tension, impact, and hardness tests." The copper and columbium additions to 17-4PH enable precipitation hardening, allowing the material to be strengthened through a controlled aging heat treatment after forming and machining in the solution-annealed (Condition A) state.

Frequently Asked Questions – ASTM A564

What is ASTM A564 and what does it cover?

ASTM A564 is an ASTM International specification covering bars and shapes of age-hardening stainless steels, including the widely used 17-4PH alloy (Type 630, UNS S17400). The specification encompasses hot-finished or cold-finished rounds, squares, hexagons, bar shapes, angles, tees, and channels produced by hot rolling, extruding, or forging. Types 630, XM-16, and XM-25 may be furnished in either the solution-annealed or age-hardened condition. The material shall be subjected to tension, impact, and hardness tests per specification requirements. The nominal chemistry of 17-4PH includes 16% Chromium, 4.0% Nickel, 4.0% Copper, and 0.30% Columbium + Tantalum, which enable precipitation hardening to achieve high strength levels while maintaining good corrosion resistance.

What is 17-4PH stainless steel and what makes it unique?

17-4PH (Type 630, UNS S17400) is a precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steel that combines high strength with good corrosion resistance in a single alloy. The "17-4" designation reflects the nominal chromium (17%) and nickel (4%) content, while "PH" stands for precipitation hardening. Unlike conventional stainless steels, 17-4PH can be strengthened through a relatively simple aging heat treatment performed after forming and machining in the solution-annealed (Condition A) state. Copper and columbium additions enable the precipitation of fine strengthening particles during aging. The alloy can achieve tensile strengths from approximately 130 ksi (H1150 condition) to over 190 ksi (H900 condition) depending on the aging temperature, offering designers significant flexibility. Its combination of strength, corrosion resistance, machinability in Condition A, and weldability makes it one of the most widely used stainless steels in aerospace, defense, and industrial applications.
